At Rosie's Rainbow Senior Dog Sanctuary, our mission is to rescue senior dogs who have no safe alternative—those abandoned, neglected, living in unsafe situations, or sitting in overcrowded shelters where they are at immediate risk of euthanasia.

 

Because our sanctuary has limited space, we are unable to accept owner surrenders.

 

We understand that life can change unexpectedly. Financial hardship, illness, moving, or other circumstances can make caring for a beloved pet incredibly difficult. We know these decisions are heartbreaking, and we never judge those who reach out for help.

 

However, our country is facing an unprecedented animal welfare crisis. Shelters across the nation are operating at or beyond capacity. Many are forced to make impossible decisions every day simply because there are more animals than available homes. While puppies and younger dogs often find adopters more quickly, senior dogs face the greatest challenge. They are frequently overlooked because of their age, potential medical needs, or the misconception that they are "too old."

 

 For many senior dogs, entering a shelter can be one of the most stressful experiences of their lives. They have spent years bonded to their families, and suddenly finding themselves in a noisy, unfamiliar kennel can be frightening and confusing. Sadly, because of overcrowding and limited resources, senior dogs often remain in shelters much longer than younger dogs—and in many communities, they are among those at the highest risk of euthanasia.  

 

If your dog is safe and you are able to continue caring for them, keeping them with the family they know and love is almost always the greatest gift you can give them.  Before considering surrender, we encourage owners to explore every available option: ask family or friends for temporary assistance, speak with your veterinarian, seek help from local pet assistance programs, like the Home to Home program.  Work with a trainer if behavioral issues are involved.  Sometimes a small amount of support can keep a beloved pet stay  where they belong.

 

 Every bed at Rosie's Rainbow is reserved for a senior dog who has already lost everything and has nowhere else to go. By remaining true to our mission, we can provide a second chance—and often a last chance—to the dogs who need us most.
